In recent years, if a programmer had a question, they didn't search for it on Google or in programming books, they looked for it on Stack Overflow. This Q&A website became the bible of developers, and it was the best way to solve almost any problem when programming, but that is changing, and ChatGPT is to blame.

The impact of ChatGPT and Copilot
ChatGPT appeared at the end of November 2022, and it soon became clear that one of its strengths was writing code in any language. A few days later, the chatbot was unleashed and many users were experimenting with it, showing that it looked like a revolution. One that, yes, would claim its victims along the way.
First it was Copilot, which for a long time was an absolute reference when it came to obtaining answers to questions among the developer community. According to data from SimilarWeb, traffic on Stack Overflow had fallen "on average by 6% every month since January 2022". GitHub Copilot had been to blame there, which was precisely the prelude to the arrival of OpenAI's chatbot. Copilot was available in preview from June 2021, and its public access came a year later, in June 2022.

After that, the problem for Stack Overflow worsened with ChatGPT, because as they indicated in that SimilarWeb study "the drop was 13.9% in March 2023". Stack Overflow did not sit well with the arrival of the chatbot, and in fact soon banned written responses with ChatGPT. It would not help much, and the drop began to worsen in January 2023.
Stack Overflow's counterattack
But Stack Overflow has not stood idly by. In response to the threat of ChatGPT and Copilot, Stack Overflow has launched its own artificial intelligence initiative, Stack Overflow AI, which will launch in August. This new platform, Stack Overflow Labs, is a space for Stack Overflow and its community and customers to explore the future of knowledge sharing, together.
Among the projects that are being developed at Stack Overflow Labs, are:
- Next Generation Slack Integration : The StackPlusOne Slack chatbot can provide generated solutions for most technical challenges instantly.
- AI Technical Design Decisions : A study on the difference between summarizing and answering questions when using large language models (LLMs).
- Enhanced Search on Stack Overflow for Teams : Use GenAI to get summarised answers quickly by entering your questions directly into the search box.
What does this mean for the future?
The launch of Stack Overflow AI is a significant step in the evolution of knowledge sharing in the development community. As AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot continue to evolve and improve, so do the platforms that have been critical to developers for years.
The question is: Will Stack Overflow's backlash be enough to win back its developer community? Or will AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot become the new norm for developers looking for answers to their programming questions?
This is today's statement from Stack Overflow:
Stack Overflow Jumps Into the Race with OverflowAI
In a bid to regain relevance, Stack Overflow today announced its roadmap for integrating generative AI into its public platform, Stack Overflow for Teams, and into new product areas, such as an IDE integration that brings its community's vast 58 million Q&A knowledge directly into the area where developers focus and get their work done. All of this work is grouped under the umbrella of OverflowAI.

Semantic and conversational search
First, they're working on introducing some powerful new search capabilities to their public site. Until now, they've relied on lexical search, trying to match users with questions and answers based on the keywords they provided. But now, they'll be adding semantic search into a private Alpha, built on top of a vector database, so that the answers generated from a search query can more intelligently align with the topics the user is researching.
Ingestion of business knowledge
OverflowAI will also add a new capability to Stack Overflow for Teams: business knowledge ingestion. By creating a new instance or onboarding new teammates, users can curate and build a knowledge base in minutes by leveraging accurate and trusted existing content.
Slack integration
To make this information easily accessible, they integrate their Stack Overflow for Teams knowledge base with Stack Overflow's new StackPlusOne chatbot. The integration collects generated solutions to the most instant technical challenges and answers queries directly in your Slack.
Visual Studio Code Extension
To help coders find solutions without breaking their flow, they're working on an IDE extension for Visual Studio Code powered by OverflowAI. This extension pulls validated content from both the public platform and your private instance of Stack Overflow for Teams to provide your developers with a personalized summary of how to solve their problems efficiently and effectively.
What does all this mean?
Stack Overflow is trying to regain its relevance in a world where generative AIs like ChatGPT and Copilot are gaining traction. With OverflowAI, Stack Overflow is attempting to combine the best of both worlds: its community's vast knowledge base and AI's ability to generate useful and relevant answers. Will it be enough to keep the AI giants at bay? Only time will tell.
